Not even Three Days Grace

Suddenly without warning, Three Days Grace singer Adam Gontier has quit the band, due to health issues.

He will be replaced by Matt Walst,  front man of My Darkest Days and younger brother of the bands bassist Brad Walst.  This is the second announcement relating to My Darkest Days in two weeks. Guitarist Sal Coz Coasta announced his departure one day after he married, in the first week of January 2013.

Although Walst Jnr has a great live vocal, he is not nearly as emotional and nor does he have the depth of Gontier, who could make his audience shake a building with his showmanship and incredible voice.  This could in all reality, be a very bad move for Three Days Grace, whose audience are used to much  grittier and way heavier in the way of a voice.

Although rumours abound, no official statement has been given to the actual health reasoning behind Gontiers decision, but one thing is for sure, 2013 has not been great for Canadian Rock so far!

See for yourself….

In just one day, day one, inception day; acoustic, quiet punks, North Shore had over 200 hits on SoundCloud, the offer of free recording and a call to interview with on-line Zine Turn It Up To Twelve (Formerly Headbangerwoman.com).

Edmonton based vocalist Deen Naught was still in a state of disbelief when TITT made our approach, but still managed to speak with us.  “I can’t believe this, this song was recorded yesterday on a cell phone….”

This is the story of Feast Before The Massacre, a once disregarded prose, scribblings, on a sheet of unimportant paper, written by Nault.

“Brad (Hosler; guitarist) and me were discussing for a while about putting these words to music.  It literally just happened.”  It seems also that Naults voice just happened.  “I had one vocal class a while ago, but with this I just really let loose.  I think I was more surprised by myself than anyone else is.”

Hosler is a little better adjusted to live performance than his partner.  He is a seasoned guitarist with Leduc outfit Smile For The Bullet .

For Nault this is un-trodden ground and there is an obvious state of overwhelming.  “My best singing so far has to be me singing in the shower.  When I saw the amount of hits on Soundcloud I was so nervous.  I was crying, I was so proud.  I freaked out so bad I threw up.”

Quiet Punks

Quiet Punks

For a guy who ignored Nault all day at their first encounter during a Vans Warped Tour show in 2010, Hosler certainly has turned it around and made a better impression of late.  His aggressive, yet smooth guitar, fits perfectly with the meaningful, feeling and determination of Naults voice.  They even speak to each other regularly now.  In fact, they were out walking together when the name North Shore was chosen as a moniker.  “We tried for mailbox..no.  Blue Fence, uh uh.  Then we walked by an RV and there they were, the words North Shore.  It just stuck.”

Although the recording of Feast Before The Massacre is not the best quality, almost 1,000 hits on Soundcloud on day three for unknowns is not to be sniffed at.  The band is already making plans to re-record the song in a month and to let rip with a second song; Home.

You need to pay attention.  This is new, it’s fresh and it will change the face of music as we know it.

Reload In Utero

In Utero by Nirvana

In Utero is the third and final studio album by the legendary grunge band Nirvana.  Preceding 1991’s iconic Nevermind, In Utero is almost a statement to the state of grunge music then and now.  Nevermind opened so many doors for the underground punk scene happening in Seattle at that time, and it’s success prompted the style and music to leak out into the mainstream media.  All of a sudden ripped jeans and old flannels became appearing on the runways at major fashion shows and everybody was listening to this new and exciting rock music, from the burned out skater kids to the snobby rich kids who got everything they wanted.  This posed a major problem for the music and the attitude surrounding it.  The whole point of punk music is to appeal to the kids who thought and acted a little differently and took a whole different perspective on life, the media, and the rules.  In the track Serve The Servants, Kurt Cobain opens with “teenage angst has paid off well/now I’m bored and old,” explaining how he got his message across, but how that message got old and tired fast.  In a way, the entire album is a tribute to the great run they had.  In the track Dumb Cobain writes; “the day is done/but I’m having fun.”  Just two years after the beginning of this major hype, the godfather of grunge declares the entire genre dead.  Some wonder if it was a last contribution for Cobain and his life, others believe the setup for when Nirvanas MTV Unplugged show was arranged as a premature funeral, but those theories should remain just that, theories.   Undoubtedly a great amount of personal pain and revelation went into the making of In Utero, but in the end it was simply an album, and nothing else.  One of the coolest things about the album is every day brings a new favorite song.  One minute Pennyroyal Tea will be the only song you want to listen to for the rest of your life, and the next Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge on Seattle, is your jam.  Possibly cited as the fans favorite Nirvana album, most believe also that, to a certain extent they really are all incomparable.   1989’s Bleach brings out that raw punk edge while Nevermind focuses more on almost Pixie-like simplistic choruses, such as from I’m on a Plain (I’m on a plain/I can’t complain.)  I feel that In Utero is more about the sheer poetry of the lyrics.  Heart Shaped Box, for example, taken from a poem originally entitled Heart Shaped Coffin written during one of Kurt Cobain and then-girlfriend Courtney Love’s hotel rendezvous, has some insane lines like; “I wish I could eat your cancer when/you turn black.”   An important part of musical history, the album is necessary for any music fan, no matter what you listen to.  It is a beautiful thing when music can cross the boundaries of genres and effect lives across the spectrum, not just the simple grunge-rocker.

Just seven months after the album was released, on April 5th, 1994, Kurt Cobain was found dead of a self- inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Some people like to think of how tragic that was, but what about the genius he created in his life? What a beautiful piece of art to go out with.

Download 2012 and 2013

DOWNLOAD 2012 RE-VISITED AN INTERVIEW WITH ANDY COPPING

Here is what Andy had to say about putting together the biggest metal show on earth.

You started your career in the music business as a DJ at Rock clubs in Lincoln and then Nottingham in the UK. When that ended, what was the chain of events/progression that led to your current position as Booker for the Download Festival and Promoter for Live Nation?

At Rock City in Nottingham, I’d started to advise them what bands they should book, as the club became a concert venue, as well as a club. They then offered me a full time position as the promoter at the venue. Soon, I gained a reputation as the go to guy for anyone who had a question about bands. I started getting head hunted by other companies, which I’d always turned down. Finally I decided to take the plunge and join the company I’m with now, to become a national concert promoter. One of the first tasks I was given was to re-launch a rock festival at the Donington Park Race Track, which had previously staged the Monsters of Rock Festival in years gone by. Download was born!

Since you attended Donington Monsters of Rock in the 80’s and 90’s as a fan, what if anything, has changed about the audience, now the name and structure is different?

The audience is definitely more demanding these days as, they are more informed and expect more for their money, which is fair enough. The competition is extremely fierce in the festival world, so the expectation level from your audience is sky high.

How often,(if ever do you get star stuck when you meet a band/artis,t or go to a show?

I ALWAYS get star struck! I’m still a fan, so whenever I see a band or an artist that I work with, I still get that feeling.

The line-up for 2012 includes Black Sabbath and is one of their only live performances, due to Tony Iommi being ill. How did you secure that booking when everyone else has had cancellations from the band?

The fact that Tony Iommi is in England receiving his treatment (which he is responding to very well, I have to say) and he lives only 30 miles from the festival site, has made the difference. Because of Tonys condition, he cannot travel long distances, but he desperately wants to play Download with Black Sabbath, so thankfully, with the festival site being so close to his home, he’s going to do it. We are extremely privileged.

Rumours abound that Metallica plan to play the Black album in its entirety. Will that be filmed for TV or band merchandising and how was that decision made? Did Download have any input on that decision?

I wanted Metallica to play at Download in our tenth year, but wanted to give it an edge. I knew it was 21 years since the release of the Black album, which is the biggest Metallica album of all time and the record that crossed them over to a wider audience, so I thought that it would be a great idea to get them to play the album in full as part of their set. They had no plans to tour in 2012, but I got on a plane and flew to New York to pitch my idea to the bands manager Peter Mensch. He liked the idea, took it to the band and they loved it!

What influences your choice of artists from one year to the next? Do you go with gut, who is making waves that year or just because you want to see that band. What is your strategy?

I try and get something a bit different every year. Faith No More three years ago, was a band that I’d worked on getting back together for Download and it was great to finally get them to do it. Download in 2009 was their first show back together in 13 years. The same with System Of A Down last year… Download has been a massive influence into getting bands back together. Some of these bands I have a personal contact with, others I have to go hunting after with my idea. Thankfully, it has proved to be successful and it has helped bands get back together again, if only for a short time.

Of course you cannot please the people all the time. Do you take guidance from the masses? The social media outbursts can be terribly abusive, if the fans think you are getting it wrong. How do you deal with that?

You have to talk to the fans and that has its downside. I have been personally abused on many occasions but you have to take the rough with the smooth. Most of the fans appreciate the fact that they have a voice and that someone will listen to them. As festival organisers, we have to listen to them…they are the ones paying the money. We have put a lot of time and resources into communicating with the Download audience and it has certainly paid off. We have made many changes to the festival on the strength of public opinion and certain suggestions that have been put to us have been implemented to make Download better. The few that abuse you are few and far between. It’s not cool but I live with it.

What is the most difficult thing you have to deal with when hosting big names that possibly expect 4 star service wherever they go?

It goes with the territory. Bands are extremely demanding and you have to adhere to their requests regardless of how crazy some of them are! I guess the most difficult thing is dealing with the amount of bands we have over the weekend (130+!) and making sure they are all happy. It’s not easy, but it is important that they have a good experience so that they can put on a great performance.

How many weeks prior to the show are things being set up in and around Donington Park? It would seem to be a possible logistical nightmare!

Booking the bands is a 52 week a year job. I’m already talking to bands for 2013. We start building the festival site ten days before the event and it’s like building a city with all its relevant facilities. It’s a massive undertaking and the production team do an amazing job…I’m glad I just have to book the bands!

Will you eventually endeavour to bring the show to N. America and repeat the show for those too far away to attend? Again, logistical hell!

You can’t rule out the fact that we could bring the Download brand to other territories. We have done it in the past and will certainly do it again.

You have bands at Download over several days, on several stages. How do you decide which bands play at the same time so the fans do not miss the bands they want to see?

It’s a juggling act for sure. We have five stages all operating at the same time, but we want to ensure that people have an alternative so that there is something that they really want to see at any given time. There are the occasional clashes and that is inevitable, but I keep these to a minimum by putting bands from different sub-genres on at the same time.

In this day and age safety is a major priority. How do you cope with 100,000 for three festival days, taking into consideration dehydration, sunburn, alcohol poisoning, stomach flu etc?

Obviously, health and safety is a major priority for us and we have to make sure that the fans welfare is at the top of our list. We want them to have a great weekend without any problems. We of course, rely on people having common sense to not do anything that can hurt them in any way, but we do have a huge amount of medics on site and welfare volunteers to take care of any isolated incidents or problems. In the UK there is a specific Pop Code that we have to adhere to, which outlines all the basic fundamental processes we have to put in place to take care of the customers. It’s a very good guideline to work to, but you always have to expect the unexpected and be prepared.

How do you make Download bigger and better every year?

I can only put on the best festival that I can, with the bands that are available to me. Every year I am looking for new things and new ideas to improve the festival…as I said previously, we speak to our customers and tickets buyers daily via the social networks and we will continue to do so. Download has been around for 10 years and we want to and intend to be around for another 10 years and beyond……..

Happy Birthday Brian

MARILYN MANSON GUNS GOD AND GOVERNMENT

LIVE AND LIP SYNCED IN LA; 2002

 WHY?

WHEN YOU HAVE EVERY BIT OF ATTENTION YOU EVER WISHED FOR AND SOME YOU DIDN’T.  THE STAGE SHOW IS SPOT ON AND THE THEATRICAL NATURE OF YOUR SHOW IS STILL MAKING TIPPER GORE VOMIT IN HER MOUTH, WOULD YOU NOT SING LIVE?

CAN MARILYN MANSON, SO CALLED SHOCK ROCKER NOT PULL IT OFF IN FRONT OF A LIVE AUDIENCE?

HAND GESTURES FROM THE FRONT MAN SUGGEST HE IS PULLING IT OFF CONSTANTLY.

ONE TOO MANY TIMES IS THE MICROPHONE AWAY FROM HIS MOUTH BEFORE THE WORDS ARE FINISHED AND YET THE SOUND IS STILL COMING FROM SOMEWHERE….

When your fans, the people who put you where you are, where you want to be, spend hard earned cash to see you perform live, that is exactly what they want.  Live.  It would seem idiotic to presume that the same people would not notice that you are pretending.

No one cares if you hit a bum note or two.  They want the experience, the feeling, the spit on their faces.  Not some half assed attempt at keeping time with the backing track.

When your music, even the covers, are raucous, hard hitting and contain provocative, gut wrenching lyrics.  When your live show compliments this with costume and theatrical cause, why allow this one little thing let you down?

Brian Warner is a well-spoken, smart man.  He knows how to work people, he knows how to get what he wants and yet he cannot figure out how to emit noise from his vocal chords into a piece of clever technology, which will carry it to an amplification devise, when he is on stage.

He does it in a studio, why not live?

This is a disappointing find.

Nice arse though!

Manson wil play Shaw Conference Centre in Edmonton, AB Feb 9 2013
