Daveros and the Jack White rip offs

Wednesday August 12th 2015 at Rexall Place, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada

Royal Blood make loud noise that you will doubtless nod your head and tap your foot to.  Unfortunately, it is everything that Jack White has already written.  This band is not The White Stripes, nor is it The Raconteurs.  Even the lighting tech didn’t realise that Royal Blood were on the stage, failing to dim the lights for a good half ofthe first song…. Their backdrop appeared quite a while later.

While the English duo can hold the attention of a crowd there is nothing original going on here.  Any gimmicks and frail attempts at showmanship or humor are wasted.  This band/duo are warming up the crowd.  That’s it.  Move along.  Not much to see here.

“Are YOU…. FUCKING READY?” came the multiple screams before the Foo Fighters appeared to assault the eyes and ears of a capacity crowd.  Dave Grohl, now appearing as Daveros atop his throne.  The rolling seat contraption was made for him after a little mishap in Sweden earlier in the tour, which caused him to fuck his right leg up, good and proper.

Dr Who fans will get the joke.  The rest of you have Google, so use it!

Opening with Everlong, the band could have sat back and listened to the entire set.  Foo Fighters were giving their all and the crowd were feeding on it, delivering above par vocal throughout..  The look in Grohls eyes during a live show is very telling.  Emotion still gets the better of him whenever the crowd take over.  He really is still just a fan.  He still doesn’t quite get that he is revered and deservedly so.  It’s a great thing to be witness to.  He doesn’t take his being on stage for granted and he works his ass off at every show, to give you what you pay for.

More than one song in the set tonight became an extended version.  Maybe it was a little too much?  Overkill perhaps?  Gauging on the fans reactions…. Not a fucking chance.

Six songs in and Grohl told the story of his broken leg, including a slide show and noises to give the full effects.  Hilarious.  He admitted that his leg X-ray quickly became merchandise in the form of a T-Shirt and pointed fans in the way of the merch stands….  This guy is spot on when it comes to marketing.

Drummer Taylor Hawkins brought his teeth and his falsetto to the show, in only a style that he can.  His blonde hair flowing rhythmically, as he beat the living hell out of his drums.  Bassist Nate (Mendel) is still (as once described to the author of this article, by Krist Noveselic, on Twitter) great..  Rami Jaffee accompanied the entire show fanatically on his keyboard.  Jaffee is certainly the Foo equivalent of Boom Gaspar, of that there is no doubt…

Guitarist and former Germ; Pat Smear, grinned inanely through the whole two hour, forty minute set.  This dude always appears to be the happiest musician on earth, but one has to wonder, with the evidence in his lack of dancing rhythm, if he actually ever has his electric guitar plugged in?

Smear played Times Like These excellently on his acoustic guitar, after accompanying fellow guitarist Chris Shiflett to the front of the catwalk.  Grohl came too, but he traded his guitar for crutches for this number and just performed vocals, while swinging the crutches precariously in front of his band mates throughout!

Asking the audience how many of them had seen the band previously was one for the books.  Apparently, many of those in attendance had not been aware of the bands existence until Sonic Highways was released in 2014!  “That’s great, we’ve only been a band for twenty fucking years” exclaimed Grohl, almost tongue in cheek.

Covers included Under Pressure; Queen and David Bowie and Stay With Me; Faces/Small Faces.  And a first for Smear performing Have It All, a song the band had not played live since 2008.

Of course everyone has heard by now about the Rush song Tom Sawyer, and the performance by Foo Fighters/Rush fan Brian Roberts.  Grohl requested that a fan come up from the crowd and sing for the bands cover, what he didn’t expect was that a karaoke fan would stand next to him and blow the roof off Rexall Place.  The look on Grohls face was priceless.  Rolling Stone even covered that story!

Taking time at several points during the evening to sign autographs for a couple of third generation Foo Fighters fans, (these young ‘uns were no older than five) Grohl showed that he really is about the fans.  He does give a shit.  He will stop his show midway to do the right thing.

Finishing with Best of You, FF waved adios to the crowd and Smear quickly lit a cigarette before exiting stage right….

A must see live show, if you ever get the chance.  Foo Fighters deliver 150% EVERY time.

Hart & Huntington @ The Hard Rock Hotel, Las Vegas.

Tattoos and music go hand in hand.  So this is the perfect opportunity to marry the two…

Rarely I write a review as a personal experience.  But this one has to be that way.  This was special.

Inconspicuous…. not super easy to find; Hart & Huntington Tattoo at The Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas, is a fair bit smaller than the original shop that appeared on TV show Inked in 20015/6.  Dizzle is gone.

This is very well maintained establishment, with a small retail section and some superb artwork by the resident tattoo artists on the walls.  We must have encountered at least 100 almost naked women on the way there…  Hard Rock pool parties are very well-known for the scantily clad and slightly tipsy gals….

My husband and I were greeted by a staff member on our arrival, and I caught the tail end of a story that blew me away, but also confirmed that I was in the right establishment.  I won’t repeat the full story, but I will just say that you won’t get a tattoo here unless you are able to sign paperwork for yourself and take responsibility for the care of your tattoo.

That makes this a classy establishment.

BJ was the guy at the desk.  He is a friendly and knowledgable guy.  He also has a super hot wife, but that’s another story.. BJ took all our information, guided us through some paperwork, gave us a quote, recommended an artist, booked our appointment for the following Saturday, and like every other establishment in Las Vegas, he took our money.

OK, to be fair it was only a $100 deposit!!

Ink Masters contestant and friend of guitarist Dave Navarro, Lea Vendetta came into work while we were there to book.  No airs, no graces, no make-up, she just sat down and started to work.  Impressive.

Mike Roche, punk bassist for TSOL was around too.  He is also a talented tattoo artist.  He also seems like a nice, very grounded guy!

We made a quick return visit to HH the day prior to our appointment, to meet our artist Steven Banegas, and to give him a little more to work with for our following appointment.Steven Banegas at work

Steven is bald and heavily tattooed…..  he is also quiet, thoughtful, proud, respectful, intelligent, humble and super talented.

Lincoln Imp by Steven Banegas

My Lincoln Imp

We were early to our 7pm appointment.  Steven was already there preparing.  He greeted us, and we got to work.  We spent almost five hours with him for our appointment on the day.  All needles were opened in front of us, all cleaning and breaking down was carried out professionally. Steven made sure we were super happy with our stencils, placements and final work. He also made sure he was happy with it all.  Another good sign.

I would wait years to get more work by Steven, and I know I will likely never get ink by anyone else.  Steven is a true professional. You are his guest when he is performing his magic.  He is truly one of the best.  I can honestly say that this was one of the best experiences my husband and I have had together, and we have been together for two decades!

We both got great tattoos that day and both of us are ready to go again!

I just want to thank everyone at Hart & Huntington Las Vegas, for making it such a great experience.

Large Fall Fruit and the Serial Thespian Bible Burner.

If any of you were so bored with life, that you watched Billy Corgans nine-hour Madam ZuZus Tea Shop and Art Studio ambient jam, in February 2014, you will also have first hand experience of his live Smashing Pumpkins show.

Though his prominent crack and pasty arse, did not have a starring role atop his slacks on the stage at The Joint, in Las Vegas on July 10 2015, he was still giving the ultimate lullaby experience.  Time has not been kind to the big orange one.  He is the embodiment of middle-aged bloke.  His shoes were not visible, and they may have indeed been slippers…..

Blurry Brown Billy

Blurry Brown Billy

Jimmy Chamberlin, a staple with the band from the early 90’s until the unease of the late 90’s/early 2000’s, saw the band break up, was once again back on his throne and the fans love it.  He plays like a true rock star.  But after an absolutely stellar performance by the preceding band, Corgans half assed vocals and pointing of his guitar neck just won’t cut it, however on beat and intricate Chamberlin is.  They are dead in the water, and no amount of paddling, or reinstating former members will save them from hitting the bottom of the lake.  The Smashing Pumpkins actually have a catalogue of great songs.  It would have been nice to see a little thought and effort go into them performing the better ones, for folk who essentially bankrolled Corgan all the way to the Teahouse…

The person that made the decision to put this band on last was an idiot…. and a genius.  It was likely Corgan!!  If The Smashing Pumkins had played first many of the crowd would have walked, apart from the really old dude that had to be forcibly removed after a mini collapse, likely due to a massive excess of potato water..   However, they played last so many in attendance stuck around, just to see if they were any good.  There was a steady trickle of folk leaving by the third song, more by the fifth.  Headbangerwoman was with them…….

When Marilyn Manson took his show to Edmonton, Alberta earlier in 2015, it was lacklustre to say the least.

Not so in Las Vegas. This show was sizzling.  White Hot.

Manson Live

Manson Live

Perhaps local radio stations should stop the practice of doling out tickets to half wits that go to shows solely to booze and antagonize others in attendance.  It seems as though it has a serious effect on the way a band performs and takes the edge off their ability to interact and become energized . Every single soul at The Joint was there to watch the spectacle that is Brian Warners alter ego, and his sidekick Jeordie (Twiggy) White.  The crowd fed the band, and the band gave a 110% rock show extravaganza.  True theater at it’s finest.  No-one can say they were disappointed.  Manson brought it, and he brought it hard.  From persuading many a gal (and possibly dudes…who knows?) in the front of the crowd to toss their bras on stage, to stilt walking and bible burning.  It all went on and it all went down well.  Mansons voice, though not record perfect, was right where it needed to be through the entire set, and he portrayed his character convincingly throughout.  If anyone in the crowd was religious, (doubtless…. but possible) they would have left immensely offended.  Just as was the aim. Unbelievable that this was the same band, only three months after a sad performance in Edmonton, Canada.  In Vegas they pulled the rabbit and it’s entire extended family, silk flowers… and a church on fire, out of the hat, to put on this show.

Hard to believe that only two years separate these two frontman, that one can still ignite the fire in you, while the other bores you to tears.  Matching portly bellies maybe, but Manson is the clear winner as far as performance.

Rising Up with AOD

Counts Vamp’d  bar in Las Vegas, Nevada is not a large venue.  But you would have expected a slightly larger audience for local band Systemec, and Canada’s Art of Dying on July 3, running into the wee hours of July 4.

It became quickly apparent that a large number of audience members were not a requirement, as Systemec played to an apparent crowd of 50,000.  A small home collective of support was all that singer Paul Anthony and co needed, as he bellowed out the grittiest, gnarliest, pure and pitch perfect vocal that many of those in attendance will have ever heard.  This dude is spot on.  He believes in what he is doing 150% and he leaves the audience feeling the same.  His look is slightly unusual and it works well with what he is portraying.

Phot courtesey of Systemec on Facebook

Anthony has great musical back up, but as a collective they could do a little work on themselves and not split their image or what they stand for.  The look and attitude of other band members were slightly random, and having Jerry Sienfeld the logger play guitar for a serious rock vocalist, kinda throws the show sideways.  Even if he is a shit hot guitarist.

Bassist Chukd makes it look like a walk in the park, but a little more aggression would go a long way.

A bigger stage would be a great thing for a guy like Anthony, he needs space.  His persona and vocals are so big.

Give these guys a listen if you like Disturbed, Rammstein or heavier Rage Against The Machine.  In fact give them a listen period.  They are worth it. You will be hooked.

New… Songs

Art of Dying are not new…. and with the loss of guitarist Greg Bradley from their line up earlier this year, regular Diehards may be wondering how the band would fare in a live situation…..  Well it would appear that they are doing great.  A little change of appereance is mainly apparent with the loss of Jonny Hetheringtons long dark curls, in trade for a blonde mohawk.

New line up

New line up

Live, Art of Dying still produce one hell of a beautiful noise.  If you are a fan from way back when you will notice a little loss of depth and would perhaps like to see the addition of a second guitarist.  However, it’s not a requirement.  Tavis Stanley can hold his own, and with the support of bassist Cale Gontier and drummer Jeff Brown,  there is no issue.

An abundance of new music was played at this venue.  It has a harder, edgier feel than previous offerings, and Hetheringtons live vocal is still one to be reckoned with.  Of course a few older songs were played, and the vibe, along with the message never gets old.

Again, the stage at Vamp’d was a little small for Hetheringtons large live persona, and a bigger audience would have suited better, but those in attendance were not disappointed.  It was great to hear unreleased songs live, and it was the only way to celebrate July 1 and 4, depending on where you were from…… Ubuntu.
